He was good for boxing before his retirement when he was taking on the likes of Chico Corrales, Jose Luis Castillo, Arturo Gatti, Oscar de la Hoya and Ricky Hatton for he provided the sport with a true, legitimate superstar in the mold of Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard.
But coming back from retirement, I don't think his extended stay is good for boxing with him avoiding a fight with the other superstar Manny Pacquiao. It is obvious that all that he cares for is raking in more money deservedly or otherwise.
It's disconcerting to learn that Sergei Kovalev earned just a million dollars in his fight with Bernard Hopkins and after deducting taxes and expenses with manager and trainers, was left with only about a fourth of the total purse!
He is the biggest draw of this generation so that is good but the fact that he is part of the reason some major fights have not been made is bad.
So i say he is good for boxing but be could be better
Yes. Just like Ali, all his antics, gimmicks and histrionics make people watch his fights, and his PPV numbers are proof that his fights, though unexciting, are all box-office success. Boxing is business, you see, so the more money the sport generates, the more successful it becomes.
Biggest draw, Most talked about. More PPV revenues.............so either he's good for or at least draws the more fans wanting to see him lose.
