A refs job is to protect the fighters as well as see it's a fair fight . you was stopped because the ref was worried you would get hurt if you keep fighting . most ko's are really by TKO it's rare for a fighter to get KO'd where he can't stand up normaly it's the ref waveing it off rather than a real ko.
fight where the ref was brave and didn't TKO the losing fighter include nigel benn vs gerald maccellan which didn't turn out to well for gerald mc .
The ref can stop a fight when in his opinion the fighter can not continue either because he can not defend himself or has no chance of winning.
The ref is responsible for trying to prevent serious injury and will not allow a fight to go on when one fighter is beat.
It sounds like he was doing you a favor, you certainly do not have to be out cold for the fight to stop.
The referee has a professional obligation to mange a safe, as well as a fair, fight. If, in his sole discretion, he believes that you are injured (maybe your pupils were unequally dilated, for example, indicating high potential for a concussion), he MUST end the fight. Because you were not unable to proceed after the count, he cannot declare a KO, so the ruling is Technical Knock Out.
This is a matter not only of tradition in fighting (arising from boxing), but is a well-settled matter of regulation, and therefore of law.

A lot of fighters get done like that. But can't argue with the ref. if he feels like you can't go anymore or are injured he'll stop it. Who knows the fighter could have fractured your face or something. You never know.
you prob could have continued and maybe even troubled your opponent....thing is it has to look good to the referee...the other guy experienced knew what would make waves and what would score points whereas you prob went in there gung-ho...its a controlled fight not a streetfight and you have to score points.
Okay, last weekend there was a fundraising event in my area where MMA fighters were contending. Well, then at random between fights my ticket was randomly selected, and they asked me if I would like to take on one of the fighters for a $500 prize if I either withstood 5 minutes in the ring, or (unlikely) defeated him. I was like "Hell yeah, I'll give it a go!" and they strapped me up.
I'll skip the embarrassing part where somehow this dude was able to predict and dodge every punch I tried to throw, but the part that gets to me is that he landed a series of blows to my face and torso and I fell to the floor. I got back up, but the ref blew his whistle, examined my face and said, "No, you're out. Take a seat over there." I was like "Dude, I'm still standing, what are you talking about?" and he was like "TKO. Sit down over there." So I sit down outside the ring, and the staff was examining me and asking me "Are you okay? Can you tell us where you are? etc" It was freaking embarrassing, I wasn't in there not even 2 minutes!
Can a referee really stop a fight on whim like that? I didn't think that was fair if I was still standing and conscious and ready for more!!! I thought a fair fight is when the ref counts to 10, and the opponent is still down! I am really mad!
