Wilder need to improve by controlling the distance and being more patient.
What's up Sean G man where do I start there are so many things that he does wrong and not at all I really would not know where to start with him. It seems to me his trainers are just happy to have him because he has not learned a damn thing. All he has is his height and that big right hand. Now when you look at him from that stand point then you begin to see all the flaws. He does not use his jab well he does not throw his right with out winding up and bring it from Alabama . No boxer worth anything would ever let him hit them with it. I can tell you this the first time he fights a real heavy weight that is not going to lay down for him he will lose. There is a big reason his people are not letting him fight real fighters trying to win. He is the modern day Butter bean king of the 4 round fights. Sean he has so many bad habits it would take two years to straighten him out and his trainers have given up on that and hoping they can cash out on him before someone fights him back. One more thing I saw on East side boxing a video of Wilder and this other guy I know he was just standing there nodding his head he never said a word but this guy is bad news and a nut hugger . I wont mention his name but he is trouble and knows nothing about boxing .Having guys like this around him will not help him. I I WONT MENTION HIS NAME NONE OF YOU WOULD KNOW HIM any way but I do.
I honestly have no idea and it's due in part to two things in particular one being the Heavyweight division and the second being the lack of risk his management team has taken. He's Thirty fights into a professional career and I can't name one fighter he's faced without looking at Boxrec.
The Heavyweight division is like a buffet in a sense because if your hungry its a great place to develop however just like a buffet its a great place to overindulge and I think that's what Wilder's people have been doing. Let me explain something: George Foreman never knocked out Thirty fighters in a row but Deontay Wilder has, that should tell is something, he's getting soft touches.
Back to your question; what does he need to improve....I have absolutely no idea because he's not being tested with any reasonable competition. If he were being matched a little bit tougher we'd be able to see certain things we never seen before.
Well, looks like he'll get his WBC title eliminator against Stiverne and if I had to put my money on someone, Stiverne is the safe option:
-Sharpen up his defense. That means keep his hands high, he had them a little low against Firtha
-Have a tighter jab (though it's really good)
-Don't throw his shots so wild, he was crazy in the Harrison fight and nearly fell over. He could be very effective with the short right-hands
-A bit faster on his feet
-Work on his 1-2 combo
-Control. Ever notice Ali and Holmes in their fights, stick their left hand out to their opponent for a few seconds (not throwing a jab), this is showing that they're maintaining their distance
-Pivot. He needs to pivot more
However, he does ALOT of things right. He's a great, great finisher, when he has you, he WILL put you out! - I ain't gonna rip this guy apart, it seems a lot of people be wary of him. And unfairly criticize him directly.
To be honest, I'm being nitpicky. We don't know that much about Wilder, he's a legit threat in the H.W division and I do believe he's being ducked.
Too many people criticize guy. I've laced up the gloves, and it's easy to criticize fighters - it takes a very special person to be a fighter, especially as dedicated and successful as Wilder. Honestly, I've fought at a young age and I'm amazed at Wilder.
He's progressed alot and he's a quick learner - It's easy to criticize him but once you step in the ring, you really start to appreciate fighters more.
EDIT: It's very easy to say he's being safely managed. When he was going to fight Liakovich, people were screaming that he'd get KO'd. Wilder KO's him and suddenly he's a bum?
Defense. He definitely has offense. He throws punches in bunches, and comes from many different angles with speed. He's been overwhelming his outclassed opponents. I think the only question left about Wilder is how his defense will do against the top guys?
He need to improve on everything but mainly his defense.
His chin is appalling it could be even worst than seth mitchells, F*cking Nicolai Firtha a guy with a 24% KO ratio wobbled him with a f*cking Jab.
With very limited rounds logged and fighting exposure achieved against generally B or C type opponents, it's really hard to tell.
How can he improve?
