Boxing: Should Broner have never jumped to 147?

Or was that too big?

No. I don't think Broner is well suited for 147. Sure, he took a one-sided beating at the hands of Marcos Maidana. However, that's more a matter of styles than weight. I think Maidana would beat Broner any time they fought.

.

It's obvious that Broner is not at his best at 147. Beating Paula Maliggnagi proved nothing at all. This guy has SIX knockouts.

.

Consider the attributes that make Broner an effective boxer. He has adequate hand speed and good power. I think he should develop a style and leave the shoulder roll alone.

.

Now consider how much of that he looses upon moving up to 147. Consider the fact that Broner stands 5'7". The average welterweight is considerably taller than Broner but still carries the weight better. He should stay away from Amir Khan.

.

Skipping over Jr. welterweight, with little or nothing to gain, tells me that Broner is probably not a very disciplined of fighter. He certainly doesn't preserve himself between fights, as Mayweather does.

.

If Broner can keep his personal life in order, he could win at one title (his 4th divisional) at 140. He certainly won't rule. And, considering that Haymon would likely protect him, he'll stay away from Garcia and Provodnikov. I don't see Broner getting past Chris Algieri, who recently surprised Provodnikov.

.

Broner will have his hands full at 140. He should certainly stay away from 147. It's not so much the weight as it is the talent level between the divisions.

Many of the current crop of welterweights aren't even that big. Pac, Marquez and Guerrero are former featherweights and Bradley and Porter are shorter dudes. IMO, his loss to Maidana came as a shock because many people were overrating Broner's talents, describing him as slick when he's never been hard to hit, and also underrating Maidana's abilities. The hard hitters at 140 won't be a walk in the park either.

Dude, Broner had ONE FIGHT at the weight. His power can't be properly assessed yet. And his opponent (Paulie) was a granite chinned guy who has never been knocked out.

Bradley had four fights at welter but look at his opposition. Even Abregu, by far his worst opponent at the weight, is a solid, tough as nails fringe world class guy. Pacquiao and Marquez are pound for pounders and known for having very good chins (the latter has never been stopped). And if Bradley was as feather fisted as you are trying to imply, he couldn't have prevented Provo from eating him alive after that first round.

Oh, and Paulie's win over Senchenko was a cut stoppage, not an actual KO. So if you were trying to prove Paulie is the most powerful of the three, then try again.

(Btw I don't even know why I typed all this out. Everyone knows it, even you. You are probably either trolling or championing Paulie because your beloved Khan beat him.)

He should have tested the waters at 140 first but there were too many sharks there so he went after the "easiest" big name at 147 and scraped by, though Malignaggi gave him problems. He should have taken it as a cue to step back down a class or two. Taking on Maidana was not a good idea because Maidana brought most of his power up from 140. Broner wasn't ready for someone who could hit that hard, that late into the fight.

Yes. He should've went to 140 instead. It's obvious 140 was too dangerous and they targeted the weakest and seemingly most vunerable champ in Paulie. Well they found out he wasn't a pushover and he nearly lost and didn't look so good. He definetly shouldn't have challenged Maidana. I think eventually he could've grew into 147 but no point in that now.

His mouth's just big. He runs his mouth so much. Im of the opinion that Maidana knew how to fight both Broner and Floyd because of the similarities in the fighting style of both. He actually almost beat both. Not saying he should have won vs Floyd because Floyd won in my cards. Fact

I don't think the weight was too much.

If you look at Broner, he's got broad shoulders and a frame that fits 147lb, it's just more of a short/stocky frame. IMO he's a big junior-welterweight, and a modest welterweight.

So to me, the problem wasn't the weight, it was Maidana. AB wasn't ready to take on such a hard hitting and experienced opponent yet.

I guess in a way the weight was part of it, Broner should've naturally went up weightclass by weightclass, but I don't think it was a situation where welterweight was too big for him.

At the end of the day, Chino was underrated and as a fighter just too much for Broner to handle at that time.

Maybe not. He should definitely never have fought maidana after how easily paulie hit him.
