Boxing: Is Amir Khan a modern day Glass Joe?

Will his chin always prevent him from being viewed as elite?

Yeah.

Khan is a very good fighter, great speed/abililty, his power is solid and his offense itself is extremely good.

His chin is not good though, and neither is his defense. I said this after the Diaz fight on one of Eddie F's questions, I think Virgill Hunter was a bad move.

Khan could've taken Diaz out IMO, but everytime he had Diaz in some trouble or on the ropes, he'd just back off to the middle of the ring.

The instinct of Khan is to be offensive, he'll never have good defense. IT's not natural for him to fight in a patient way.

Even when he tried to "box and jab" like Virgil wanted, he still got caught and hurt three or four times. Let Khan be who he is, clearly he'll get hurt no matter how he fghts, so taking away from the best aspect of his game (his offense) is just taking away from his overall ability to win.

It's no secret that I am not a Khan fan, he is very arrogant and has said some pretty bad things about the British public, who did support him very much in the Olympics and early career, however I will try to answer this as objectively as possible.

Khan is a fast and skilled boxer and has heart but you pretty much know that if he is hit cleanly he is going to go. His chin isn't totally awful, as he took some heavy shots from Marcos Maidana and has gotten up to win more than once, it isn't world class though.

On the way up he was floored by journeymen and non punchers, his style should be more focused toward protecting his chin but he often gets drawn into a battle, which usually results in him being dropped. I think his chin will prevent him ever becoming an elite fighter because if you look back throughout boxing history elite boxers have always been able to take a decent shot and boxers with weak chins, however good they are, are usually just regarded as very good, rather than great.

Well, it depends.

Lets remember, Lennox Lewis didnt have a reinforced chin, and he had a reign of almost ten years.

Lets be honest, Amir Khan could be the next great story in boxing, if he did some public relations clean up. People LOVE a human boxer, someone that CAN lose but somehow still manages to win. The Arturo Gattis of the world. If Khan humbled his public persona enough he could easily win the hearts of alot of boxing fans.

The part thats disheartening is that he truly is getting bad tutilage about how to fight. Lewis wasnt really any good until Manny got a hold of him and taught him how to fight his size.

Khan would need the same.

Khan will always be held back by his chin and I don't think his defense is gonna get better anytime soon, one of his major defensive mistakes is that he doesn't bring his hands straight back to his chin when popping off his lightening fast combos.

But it slightly annoys me when people just laugh him off, like there was article about him telling Tyson Fury to stop running his mouth on his American debut, yes Khan has done his fair share of trash talking but there was a comment saying something like "hahaha don't take advice from a glass chin" now to become a 2 time world champion at 26 with his glass chin is something to admire, is it not?

The move up to 147 isn't wise either with bigger punchers and I don't think he will ever become an elite fighter, but he's exciting and that alone can get you remembered just as much as being an elite fighter. I also think his power is overrated.

The thing about a chin is, it doesn't get better. Your chin is your chin. (Obviously I'm aware that they do neck exercises to help it but let's be real, does that really work?) Amir Khan is a great boxer. When i first saw him years ago I thought he'd be a multiple champion in numerous weight classes. However, he has such a brittle chin, such a brittle chin with bad defense is a BAD combination. In my opinion though I think with the right trainer, he can develop the neccesary boxing skills and defense where he can compete and win at the highest of levels despite his chin. If you are a good boxer, your chin wont matter because nobody will hit you. (See Rigondeaux, Mayweather, ETC.)

Yes, Man he's been getting floored by everyone lately, It has almost become a tradition in all his fights now.

When he goes up to 147, the matter will only get worse for him, as there are quite a few heavy hitters in that division. Even at 140, someone like Matthysse would mop the floor with Khan.

Amir Khan doesn't have a glass jaw but he has a questionable chin he took a lot of clean shots right on the chin from Diaz and though Diaz was a good lightweight puncher he still could bang at a heavier weight I am sure.

Yes because it also prevents him from becoming a very successful fighter...

LOOOOOOOL, HILARIOUS...

Yes. Amir Khan is what I've said to all his followers years ago. OVER-RATED.

Will his chin always prevent him from being viewed as elite?
