What is her favorite color? Choose different tones of that color and decorate with it. As she is a little teen now, try not to decorate it too childishly, as in more adult, less hearts and flowers and cliche things.
Maybe also get her favorite animal and put it on top or just write her name on the cake.
If you have two layers of cake you could make them both look different, I will attach a picture that I found cool. Use fondant icing for the covering, it is easy to handle and looks great.
