If I am at your place then I would go for BBQ which start with some appetizer. The whole BBQ will be handled and made by me and some of my invited friends (expert in BBQ) and during this a light music will play a vital role to keep the momentum of the party. During this, I must add some more games and activities which involve everyone in the party. If certain assigned activity couldn't done by any person then he or she must be punished (some interesting thing to do) etc etc.
Hard idea, but tapas style around the world dishes, so people can try new cuisines. Or one one set theme always works nicely
My dad's birthday was yesterday an we had homemade tacos. But I like surf and turf on my bday. Shrimp, scallops, steak, and broccoli with bernaise sauce. Maybe some twice baked potatoes yumm
