He was champ back in his day,but he was mafia connected and that can go a long way as far as titles are concerned
To totally credit to his so-called Mafia connection Carnera's relative success in his professional boxing career is to ignore the fact that Carnera fought more than half of his more than 80 bouts outside of the USA, notably Chicago and New York where the mob held sway. How would we explain his significant wins outside the USA especially when he was building himself up like fights versus Young Stribling, Paulino Uzcuddun and Reggie Meen all held in Europe?
Has it not occurred to you that Crnera could have been victim of fixed fights by the mafia himself given his physical attributes? Like his first fight versus Jack Sharkey for the American heavyweight championship in 1931 where he lost on points.
There was indeed furor over his world title win over the same Sharkey by KO in 1933 but Carnera I m sure was no joke as a fighter, mafia or no mafia. He proved that by successfully defending his title versus Tommy Loughran and Uzcuddun in 1933-34.
It took Max Baer eleven rounds to stop him in losing his title in 1934 And Joe Louis took six rounds to dispatch him where Louis took less than an average of three rounds to kayo Battling Levenski, Max Baer and Uzcuddun, all in a whirlwind winning binge in 1935.
Carnera was a good fighter in his time.
Carnea was a strongman in the circus first, discovered and brought to Paris to become a boxer, where he won bouts and had a winning record against so so opponents. Brought to America he was fed some easy fights and a few he actually won. But was discovered to be very lacking in actual skills he lost to Joe Louis, Max Baer and several top contenders. Most all fighter's were subject to the Mafia, although not connected, as the mob ruled boxing and it's promotion.
many fighters back then were handled hy the mafia (which got them easy fights) but carnera die not fix ir participat3 in fixed fights, thats inly newspaper rumors much the same in what they say of deontay wilder today.
carnera was once the undisputed heavyweighr champion so yes he was good mostly due to his physical condition and size
He was good but he was certainly not a world champion caliber fighter.
He was set up to win the championships, he did not get there through talent.
Was Primo Carnera any good?
