These were the boxing games all time greats. They behaved in public and all the youth, including adults from all over idolize these champions. I believe that Joe Louis of 1940 was a very sharp puncher as well as a terrific boxer. True, he had been down in his career, but who would not against the likes of Buddy Baer, Jim Braddock, Tony Galento, later Rocky Marciano and Jersey Joe Walcott. He defended hi World Heavyweight Title, a record 25 times. He held the title from 1937-1949. Rocky Marciano, was a brawler with a lot of heart and an iron chin. He held the World Heavyweight Title from Sept 23,1952 until his retirement on April 27,1956. I see Louis keeping the Rock at bay with a stiff left jab, and throwing the atomic bomb right hand, that sent many others to sleep. Louis would hit the deck for an eight count in round 11, but he would severely cut Rocky, forcing the referee to stop the slug fest in round 13. This would not resemble their actual match that occurred on Oct 26,1951, when Rocky stopped an aging, come backing Joe Louis in round 8.
There would certainly not be a lot of moving in this fight. The problem is that Joe Louis was the most accurate jabbing heavyweight at the time he held the title. Marciano would bob and weave but Joe would set him up using the jab and follow with the right.
It's not likely that Marciano would be able to last too long if he doesn't find a way around Louis' jab. It's possible that Rocky scores a knockdown in the early rounds. However, he fails to keep Louis on the deck. By the middle rounds, the jab/right combination has taken a toll on Rocky's face.
Unable to see the rights following the jab, Rocky's eye is swollen shut. He's on his feet when the referee stops the contest with Rocky taking punishment.
Louis by TKO in 13.
Both are great fighters. It can go either way. Joe Louis is the better boxer here but Rocky has probably one of the best chin in the heavyweight division back then. Rocky right hand if connected can hurt anyone. If Max Schmeling right cross can TKO him then Rocky right cross can KO him. So either Joe win an unanimous decision or Rocky get lucky and KO Joe.
IMO , Marciano was a tough brawler with a never say die attitude and always in top condition, however, Joe Louis was all Marciano was but a far better boxer and combination power puncher. He continues to stop Marciano in his tracks and scores with his piston jab and endless combinations. I see a late round stoppage on cuts with Louis a TKO winner.
Louis had way too much skill than Marciano. He was fast, quick and accurate with his punches. He threw short, crisp shots laced with heavy power and he never threw unnecessary punches. He could fight all types of fighters - tall, short, boxer, puncher, etc. Rocky only had a big punch and a big heart, but that ain't enough against a completed fighter like Joe Louis.
louis in his prime would be too much for marciano. it goes the distance, but louis gets off the floor to take a ud.
